Utilitarianism is often criticised for not taking the value of equality seriously. In a new paper in Ergo, I argue that utilitarianism does take equality seriously, to the extent that it should be considered an egalitarian theory.
This paper grew out of my PhD thesis, which you can read here. I had the first thoughts in this direction in 2018, and it’s been through a lot of redrafts, revisions and rejections. So finally publishing it feels quite special.
