I have an article in the New Socialist, on the 1914 novel ‘The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists’ by Robert Tressell. The book is in some ways the Bible of the British socialist movement, and it is in various ways surprising, problematic and helpful to current socialist strategy.
This essay is quite personal to me, since my copy of the book was given to me by my grandfather, who grew up in Hastings (the basis of the book’s fictional town, ‘Mugsborough’) and whose father worked in construction, as do the protagonists of the novel.

The editorial team at the New Socialist are incredible – amongst the most helpful I’ve worked with – and the content they put out is always worth reading. However, they struggle financially. I really encourage you to subscribe and contribute to the publication, here: https://newsocialist.org.uk/subscribe/
