I have a new publication out in Topoi – a reading of Bernard Williams’s famous ‘integrity objection’ to utilitarianism. You can read it here.
When I first came across this objection, as an undergraduate, I thought it was stupid. I think many utilitarians dismiss it as such. But under the guidance of Veronique Munoz-Darde, I came to see that it was actually a deep and important problem for utilitarianism. This paper shows how I interpret it.
I also think that utilitarians can make a good response to the integrity objection. I explore this further in my PhD thesis, and in this paper.
