I presented a work-in-progress paper, called ‘Capitalism and the Very Long Term’, at the Understanding Value X Conference, organised by the University of Sheffield, last week. I’d previously presented similar work at the Soth West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership inter-disciplinary conference on futures. In the paper I argue that capitalism has a tendency to under-serve the very long-term interests of humanity, and therefore that anticapitalism should be considered as an effective altruist strategy.
Here’s an audio recording of the UVX talk, and here’s the slides to go with it.
This is very much work-in-progress, so I’d be very grateful if you have any comments for me about it – especially if you think I’m wrong (and especially on the economics!). Email me.
